State of IITs

Rosy pictures at all times for IITs by the media, by its alumni and almost everybody. Large chunk of govt funds flowing in. Everything looked great about them till I visited the first and oldest institute out of the seven stars.......

The hostel room space is grossly inadequate, provided to 1st year students in Malviya hall. The room is on twin sharing basis but has just one almirah. With great difficulty one can put two very small sized tables. And thereafter we find hardly any space left to move around. Water supply was for a very short period and almost none for the higher floors. I saw poor students climbing stairs with water buckets after collecting water from the ground floor. I thought situation might improve in 2nd year.....

But this looked even worse. I found the 2nd year students in the oldest hostel, Patel Hall, living in even smaller rooms, again on twin sharing basis. This time they had to share the table also in addition to the almirah.

I studied in a state owned engg college but led a fairly comfortablel lifestyle. Right from the 1st year itself, we had separate almirah and big study table for each student. Ward boys were employed by the administration to sweep and also wash the clothes.

Any guess why the brightest stars are made to live in such a cramped space? Why IITs with floating funds are unable to utilise them? There is vast empty ground available to construct 'n' number of hostels. On top of all this Arjun Singh is enforcing 27% additional seats. Where will they all be put up?
